8 Persoalan Untuk Filem Star Wars : The Force Awakens

Unless you’ve been hiding under a (George Lucas special edition) rock for the past year, you’re probably aware that the seventh instalment in the Star Wars saga, JJ Abrams’s The Force Awakens, is released in the UK next week.

To help pass the time between now and next Thursday, we’ve compiled a list of some of the biggest, burn-iest Force Awakens questions currently sizzling away in our brains.

Obviously, we've not yet seen the film, so there aren't definite spoilers in this. But we have included some of the latest fan theories, speculation and rumour – so if you prefer to know nothing at all about a movie before watching it, this might not be the Star Wars article you're looking for.

1. Where is Luke?

The trailers so far have given us plenty of shots of Harrison Ford’s Han Solo, and a few glimpses of Carrie Fisher’s General Leia – but, brief shot of a hand aside, Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker has been glaringly absent. The juiciest internet theory around, of course, is that he’s abandoned his Jedi goodness (“hello Dark Side my old friend…”) and gone Sith. Another theory suggests that he’s exiled himself, unable to manage his powers – a bit like Queen Elsa in Pixar’s Frozen, albeit probably with more beard and slightly less singing. Either way, we can’t wait to see what Luke’s been up to in the 30 or so years that have passed since the events of Return of the Jedi.

2. Who’s going to be the new Jedi?

Runaway stormtrooper Finn, played by John Boyega, has been seen brandishing a lightsaber in the some of new trailers, suggesting that he could be a Force Sensitive who goes on to develop Jedi powers. But some fans suspect this may be a red space herring, and that Daisy Ridley’s Rey, the film’s protagonist, is the real Jedi-in-waiting. Perhaps they’ll be two Jedi. Or no Jedis at all. Perhaps Chewie will be the new Jedi. All we can do is wait and see.

3. Will Yoda get a mention (from Maz)? Or even a cameo?

Aside from a fleeting appearance in one of the recent trailers, we haven’t seen or heard all that much about Lupita Nyong'o’s character: a 1000 year-old alien orange space pirate named Maz Kanata.

But at a recent press conference (via moviepilot.com), JJ Abrams teased his audience by revealing a significant fact from the character’s past. Maz, it transpires, has “crossed paths” with Yoda.

"I do believe that Maz and Yoda at one point had crossed paths,” he said, in relation to a question from the actress Mindy Kaling. “But that is not something, of course, due to the events of past films, that happens in this one..."

Will Yoda get a mention from Maz in the new film? A scurrilous anecdote about his younger days, perhaps? Or could  he even turn up as a Force Ghost (a rumour to this effect hit the internet a few months ago)? Keep our fingers crossed, we will.

4. Is a major character going to die?

Last summer, a particularly upsetting Star Wars rumour suggested that a key character would be meeting his/her end in The Force Awakens. We’re still praying it’s not true.

5. How is everyone related?

While scavenger Rey has been described in cast interviews and promotional material as an orphan, very few Star Wars fans are convinced by this (Luke Skywalker spent years believing his father was dead, and look how that turned out). Popular theories have suggested that Rey definitely has Skywalker blood, and is either the daughter of either Han Solo and Leia, or the daughter of Luke. A recently released Chinese trailer, in which Rey reveals that her background is “classified”, simply added fuel to the already-furious speculation. Could Rey’s parentage have been deliberately hidden, for her own protection?

Many fans also suspect that the film’s main villain, Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren, could be Rey’s brother. His Vader fixation – we’ve all seen him chatting away with the Sith lord’s mangled old helmet in the trailers – could suggest a family connection, and seeing a brother and sister on opposite sides of the Force divide would certainly make for some excellent sibling space drama.

Theories have also been put forward about Finn’s background. Last month, for instance, an Amazon listing for a piece of Star Wars merchandise appeared to hint that Lando Calrissian could be the character’s father (although the information was posted by the seller, who may have simply made a mistake, rather than by Disney).

JJ Abrams has stated that the secrecy surrounding the character’s surnames is “completely intentional”, hinting that some sort of reveal can be expected. But with two additional sequels due to follow The Force Awakens, there’s no guarantee that it’ll be in Episode VII.

6. Just how important is BB-8?

When the super-cute orange-and-white rollerball droid BB-8 appeared in the very first Force Awakens trailer, the predominant reaction from Star War fans was a sort of collective “aww”, mingled with some overexcited squeaking. We emptied (or at least depleted) our bank accounts and snapped up the miniature Sphero replica as soon as it the market, and celebrated when we learnt that the adorable astromech was striking a blow for equal robot representation by apparently being female.

But instead getting distracted by the robot’s appeal/gender, perhaps we should have been thinking a little harder about BB-8’s role in The Force Awakens.

Sources close to the filmmakers have revealed that the droid plays an “integral” part in the film and acts as a buddyto Rey (in much the same way that R2-D2 was attached to Luke in the original trilogy).

Thanks to the aforementioned recent Chinese trailer, we also know that BB-8’s background, history and mission are “classified” information, which the robot is unable to reveal to her human companion.

The key question, it seems, is whether Rey and BB-8 meet by chance – or whether the droid, believed to have originally belonged to pilot Poe Dameon (Oscar Isaac), has been programmed to find and befriend the orphaned scavenger.

The predominant rumour online is that BB-8 has been entrusted with Luke Skywalker's missing lightsaber, and discloses this only when she meets Han Solo. But was it Dameron who sent her on this mission? Or someone else?

Could it even turn out, in a devastating reveal, that the little droid who stole our hearts was working for the Dark Side all along?

While the answer is probably "no" (take away the cute-factor and Disney won't sell nearly as many BB-8 toys ), it'd still make a fantastic twist.

7. What is Snoke up to?

While we've been informed that Andy Serkis’s Supreme Leader Snoke will be the key antagonist throughout the next three Star Wars films – the new, Palpatine-esque big bad – we actually know very little about what the character will be doing in The Force Awakens. His overall storyline is being kept secret, but a new "behind the scenes" piece in People Magazine confirms that the First Order leader, who is over seven foot tall and "very very thin", will appear in scenes with Kylo Ren.

"It's not a complete green-screen environment," Force Awakens cinematographer Daniel Mindel the magazine, explaining how, even though Snoke is created using CGI, Serkis still filmed alongside other characters on set.

"Therefore, we have atmosphere. We have texture that we're putting [Snoke] into, that is physical. Sometimes, from the outside it would seem absurd to just walk in and look at how we do that. On the other hand, there's a great amount of method to it. In that particular theme, we had Andy Serkis interacting with Adam. Andy himself brought a massive amount to the scene."

8. Will there be Ewoks?

Sadly, we’re pretty sure we already know the answer to this one: it’s almost certainly a no. (There’s also no Jar Jar Binks.) But hey Until the film actually hits cinemas,  those of us who still harbour a soft spot for the furry, stormtrooper-guzzling inhabitants of a certain forest moon can still dream.
